Once rafting microbial life; all without a condensing atmosphere of the terrestrial variant; the post-Theia, twice snowball Earths (720-635 mya), of which the Laki eruption’s largest recorded lava flow and transported aerosols (8 June 1783) were framing conditions for the economy of plants foreseen by Erasmus Darwin (1791)—dan

https://www.space.com/40840-nanodiamonds-mysterious-cosmic-microwave-light.html

"One to 2 percent of the total carbon in these protoplanetary disks has been incorporated into nanodiamonds, according to the team's estimates.

Another leading AME-source candidate, a family of organic molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), doesn't hold up under scrutiny, the researchers said. The infrared signature of PAHs has been identified in multiple young star systems that lack an AME glow, they noted.

The new results could help astronomers better understand the universe's early days, study team members said. Scientists think the universe expanded far faster than the speed of light shortly after the Big Bang, in a brief period of 'cosmic inflation.' If this did indeed happen, it should have left a potentially detectable imprint — an odd polarization of the cosmic microwave background, the ancient light left over from the Big Bang.

Astronomers have been hunting hard for this imprint but have yet to find it. (One research team thought it had made the epic discovery a few years ago, but that turned out to be a false alarm.)

The new study provides 'good news for those who study polarization of the cosmic microwave background, since the signal from spinning nanodiamonds would be weakly polarized at best,' said co-author Brian Mason, an astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, Virginia.

'This means that astronomers can now make better models of the foreground microwave light from our galaxy, which must be removed to study the distant afterglow of the Big Bang,' Mason added."

The new study was published online today (June 11) in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Orione/Osiris e Iside. Cormorants in the Salone de Mesi, Guigno.

"And there is such an intolerable silence in Lance's room, with its battered books, and the relatively new tennis racket in its preposterously secure press, and a penny on the closet floor - and all this begins to undergo a prismatic dissolution, but then you tighten the screw and everything is again in focus. And presently the Bokes return to their balcony. Has he reached his goal - and if so, does he see us?"

"Lance" by V. Nabokov (1951)

I realized today that nothing that chase after alone measures with this eventuality.

"The tree also revealed that some groups of butterflies have evolved faster than others. Two of the fastest-evolving groups, commonly known as the blues and the whites, have developed highly specialized interactions with other organisms that might explain their rapid evolution, say Grishin’s team. The blues, or Polyommatinae, form symbiotic relationships with ants, whereas whites, or Pierini, have developed adaptations to feed on mustard plants that are toxic to many other insects."

I have to remember, for posterity, that the cardiologist that placed a leadless pacemaker the day prior, who came up to debrief the patient of advanced age, on the success of his AVJ ablation (the lesion placed with the atrium contracting at 160 bpm on an esmolol drip) said that in all of his thirty years of practice, he has never worked on a femoral access, and been sprayed so thoroughly in the face with urine.

"Children and adolescents receive implantable cardioverter–defibrillators (ICDs) and pacemakers (PMs) for structural and electrical cardiac disease. Adults with ICDs have significantly higher levels of depression and anxiety,1–5 and frequent ICD discharges in adults have been associated with even higher risk for depression and anxiety.6 However, studies on children and adolescents with ICDs are limited.7–11 DeMaso and colleagues12 found changes in scores for anxiety, depression, family functioning, and quality of life (QoL) in pediatric patients with ICDs (20 patients). Sears and colleagues13 examined a similar age group with ICDs and reported lower psychosocial and physical QoL scores compared with healthy children (60 patients). Koopman and colleagues14 found higher rates of depression and anxiety and found that the presence of shocks and a longer time since device implantation were associated with higher anxiety scores in young patients (30 patients). All these studies are limited by reliance on self-report measures. To date, no study has evaluated children for the presence of emotional or behavioral conditions using a standardized structured psychiatric interview."

I was tempted into reimagining the story by Ian Frazier:

"In an afterword to a 1970 edition of 'Lolita,' Nabokov referred to a place called Gray Star as 'the capital town of the book.' After Humbert is out of her life, Lolita, by then married and pregnant but still in her teens, moves to Gray Star with her husband, Dick Schiller. Gray Star is in Alaska, as the larger context makes clear. “Lolita” purports to be a manuscript written in prison by an accused criminal, Humbert Humbert, who is using this made-up name instead of his real one so as not to bring disgrace on anybody with a connection to the story, especially his beloved Lolita. Through his lawyer, the manuscript has come into the possession of an editor and psychologist, John Ray, Jr., Ph.D. The book’s subtitle, 'The Confessions of a White Widowed Male,' supplied by Humbert, makes it sound like a case study, perfect for Dr. Ray, who writes a brief foreword explaining the provenance. Ray tells us of Humbert’s and Lolita’s ends. Humbert had expected to die soon, and his wish was that the book not be published until Lolita was also dead. He had hoped that she would outlive him by many years. Dr. Ray informs us that Humbert died of coronary thrombosis in prison in mid-November of 1952, shortly after finishing his manuscript, and that Mrs. Richard Schiller died in childbirth in Gray Star on Christmas Day of the same year. Per Humbert’s wishes as conveyed to his lawyer, Dr. Ray is therefore publishing the manuscript.

Is Gray Star the book’s 'capital town' because Lolita—along with her baby, a stillborn girl—died there? Had Lolita lived a normal span of years, the book would not have come out, following its own logic, until our present century, and maybe would not exist even today; Lolita, born in 1935, would have been eighty-five in 2020. But I don’t think that’s the real reason that Nabokov made such a significant-sounding statement about Gray Star."

Three amino acid substitutions at the aCh receptor prevents the phantasmal poison frog from poisoning itself with its neurotoxin epibatidine.

"Epibatidine is a natural alkaloid that acts at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs).

[...]

The great interest in epibatidine arises with the discovery of the analgesic activity mediated by non-opioid receptors. This mode of action is a good alternative to induce analgesia with no risk of dependence, tolerance and psychological dependence. The lack of opioid-receptors mediated activity has been proved by the co-administration of naloxone, an opioid antagonist. The experiment performed by Qian et al. [6] proved that the epibatidine-induced anti-nociception in mice and rats, is not influenced by naloxone, but the effective therapeutic dose is close to the lethal dose and, thus, the therapeutic safety interval is narrow. The main clinical signs of epibatidine toxicity includes activation of exocrine secretions (rhinorrhea, sialorrhea, lacrimation), seizures, hypertension, and muscle paralysis. These effects occur because epibatidine binds to nAChRs in the CNS, as well as to nAChRs in skeletal neuro-muscular junctions" [7] (Salehi et al., 2017).

Lusitropy, from λῠ́σῐς (lúsis, “loosing, releasing, ransoming”, noun) +‎ -tropy (“condition of exhibiting (such) a behavior”).

Lusitropy is myocardial relaxation, to allow filling, and epibatidine derivatives would decrease lusitropy, increase contractility through sympathetic cholinergic stimulation of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors triggering the influx of cytosolic calcium inti the sarcoplasmic reticulum.

I will have to explore this further, about epibatidine, an analgesic with a narrow therapeutic window that precludes stunning the heart and skeletal muscle to death with neuro-exitation. Unlike opiate downers, which run out the clock through CNS depression.

I feel anesthetized, but these feelings are subject to change, as always.

A case of treating the monitor and not the person: a dry, elderly surgical patient with HFpEF came back with trickle IV fluid, and I was there making him drink, i.e. to reverse his afib. He was asymptomatic. The constant calls about the heartrate in the 130-150s forced a call for IV lopressor twice, and he went into sinus arrest for a few episodes lasting under six seconds due to av node dysfunction/block. He did not receive his oral sotalol in the morning, and his BP was then marginally low to give it (for rate control). Had we waited and rehydrated him slowly, the cumulative effects of the beta blocker may not have resulted in the pauses. Maybe not?

After having a med pass interrupted with a psych resident quickly getting to the facts, about a stay in a New Jersey reform school, abuse for thirteen years, and a Seton drain ano-in-situ resulting from that, I have decided that he should receive the best treatment, if he survives, or if he dies with us. His last meal before surgery was a Philly cheesesteak, fries, and Fanta debited to my universal account. The balance of giving and receiving is essential in life, and someone who has been through so much should now receive from others. That is the lesson.

The flooded basement required a neighbor with a shop vac. The repair is later this week. In fact, I would like them to have this, so I can move...That would make me happy, no complicated sales or transfers, and I would know that it would be in good hands.
